Since its release in November, the visuals and performance ofGod of War Ragnarokhave received incredible acclaim for maintaining a smooth performance while still having jaw-dropping visuals that far surpass its predecessor. That being said, despite the amount of care and polish put into the game, it is not necessarily free of all rough spots.
With the recent releases ofPokemon Scarlet andVioletandGotham Knightssuffering from performance and technical issues,God of WarRagnarokis comparatively a marvel in the industry. Still, as expansive as the game is, some glitches fell through the cracks, including one that causes a crate to be stuck on Kratos' head.

The bug was first documented on Reddit by user jmathews777 who recorded a video of the game’s protagonist running around with a crate lodged on his head. Beyond the visual humor that comes withKratos continuing his epic and emotional journeythroughout the nine realms of Norse mythology, the eight-second clip implies that it does not affect the gameplay in any substantial way.
With these glitches, almost anyone would feel a minor annoyance at having their immersion broken in a game where the goal is to draw players in with an engrossing atmosphere, but the comedy is more likely to break through. This contrasts with bugs that actively impede player action, such as one in the previous game’s PC port that hadAtreus stuck in a tree, preventing him from progressing with the player despite being key to combat and traversal. IfRagnarokdoes receive a PC port down the line, it does beg whether players will discover more glitches.
Despite instances such as a crate being stuck on Kratos' head, almost the entirety of his newest journey shines as both a technical showcase for Sony’s latest console and as a swansong for its previous generation. Having the game perform as well as it does on nine-year-old hardware with some sacrifices is a commendable feat on Santa Monica Studio’s behalf, even ifGod of War Ragnarokruns loud doing so.
It remains to be seen if glitches like this will be patched out, but givenGod of War Ragnarok’s acclaim, they have not detracted from the experience. Fans still have a lot to chew through inRagnarok, but there will be no doubt that whenever the franchise’s next game is announced, it will be met with great excitement.
God of War Ragnarokis out now for PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5.
